Santé Windows Q&A

Santé Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP Q&A

QUESTION:

What does NS and NFS mean in descriptions of foods and nutrients?

ANSWER:

NS – "Not Specified"

Example from Santé: Fish stick, patty, or fillet NS as to type, baked or broiled.

NFS – "Not Further Specified". Found when some descriptive information is not reported by USDA Survey.

Example from Santé: Honey Loaf – Serving 1 is "slice, (1 oz.), Serving 2 is "slice, NFS" (the size of the slice is not specified).

QUESTION:

On nutrition analysis reports for meals/foods, why don’t the Fat-Carbohydrate-Protein %’s add up to 100%?

ANSWER:

% Fat, Carbohydrate, and Protein should add up to within +/- 10%, as this is a calculated value. Meal reports should add up. Protein, Fat, and Carbohydrates are analyzed by food manufacturers, using varying lab procedures. Therefore, pro + fat + carb definitely won’t come out to exactly 100%. They don’t add up on food labels either. Food labels can be accurate to +/- 20%, with a range of 80 to 100%

Note: To calculate calories, multiply grams of Pro x 4, Carb x 4, Fat x 9

QUESTION:

Nutritional information obtained from package labels is used to enter an Added Food to Santé. In instances where only DV %’s are given on the label (i.e. vitamins), Santé calculates weights in g, mg. etc. Then when looking at the nutritional report for that food, many of the RDA %’s differ from what is shown on the labels. Why?

ANSWER:

The food labels follow the old USRDA, which uses the highest RDA for any age or gender. This is referred to on package labels as DV (Percent Daily Values). Food labels are designed for the general adult American without taking into consideration gender or age information, therefore the highest requirements have to be listed on the food labels.

RDA’s are designed for the individual American using age and gender information to make specific recommendations. Therefore, these percentages are different for each user and will not match the DV % information on food package labels in most cases.

QUESTION:

Is it possible to edit RDA information (either the mg. quantities or the percentages) if I feel that my personal requirements differ from what Santé calculates, based on my age and sex?

ANSWER:

No, the RDA values that Santé calculates for each user cannot be changed. The only way to compensate individually is to adjust your food intake according to what you feel your own guidelines are. For example, if your reports show that you are at 100% of your RDA for a particular nutrient, but you feel that this is incorrect, you may choose to consider a percentage higher or lower than 100% as your own personal standard.

QUESTION:

I get error message when trying to start Santé: "STARTUP PROBLEM: THIS CONTROL REQUIRES VERSION 4.70 OR GREATER OF COMCTL32.DLL". What causes this?

ANSWER:

Early version of Win95 had an older .dll file. This has been corrected in later versions of Win95.

SOLUTION:

Run "Win95_fx" that is on the Santé Win 95/98 CD. This will update the .dll file.

QUESTION:

After adding a new food and then placing it into a meal, I get the message "fillnutrientarray Invalid type conversion"

When trying to edit quantity from meal block, I get message "measok prob" "is not a valid floating point value". What am I doing wrong?

ANSWER:

When adding a new food, make sure there is a value in "grams" (either enter grams directly or select unit of measure from drop-down list and Santé will convert to grams).

QUESTION:

I am unable to add foods to a meal or search for a food, after starting Santé by inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive. I get the message: "SQL Failure. Capability not supported. File or directory does not exist. File..d/qsql000ddf Table does not exist. Permission Denied." What am I doing wrong?

ANSWER:

There is a known problem with the auto-start feature. Note: Once initially installed, the only time you need to have the CD in your CD-ROM drive is if you wish to import additional foods from the CD to your hard drive.

SOLUTION:

You do not need to have the CD in the drive to start the program. Start it by clicking on icon under START/PROGRAMS/SANTE FOR WINDOWS 95. If you do insert the CD into the drive, when the first display appears – select "Exit" and then start by clicking on the icon.

QUESTION:

I stopped using Santé for a few months and later resumed use. Now when accessing "Meal" menu, I get message "Get exertable Access to table disabled because of previous error." Then "Exertable problem in mealget Access to table disabled because of previous error." I tried reinstalling from the CD with no change in results. What could have happened, and what do I do now?

ANSWER:

This may be another instance where Santé was started using the auto-start feature instead of starting it from the icon. Also, if starting Santé with the CD in the CD-ROM drive, inspect it for damage that may have occurred since last used. If the disc is damaged, it may be returned to Hopkins Technology for free replacement.

QUESTION:

I get the message "Dataset not in insert or edit mode" when trying to import a meal into another day’s meal screen.

ANSWER:

Occurs from "Import Meal" screen if user clicks on "OK" or "Cancel" at bottom of the display without having a person’s name highlighted.

QUESTION:

I initially used the free down-load demo version of Santé, and then later purchased the CD-ROM version. I first went through Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove to remove the demo version of Santé, and then went through the installation procedure from the CD. When entering Santé, I still get the messages telling me how many uses I have left or that the program has expired. Why?

ANSWER:

Santé is still running under the demo version. Using Windows Explorer, first make backup of .sa1 files if there is personal data you wish to save, or use Santé’s backup option. Then delete the Santé folder and all individual files, which removes all traces of the demo version. Now put Santé CD into CD-ROM drive and go through installation steps; then restore from backup, or copy back .sa1 files as needed.

QUESTION:

When trying to add foods to a recipe, I selected a food from the database, highlighted it, and clicked on the "OK" in "Foods Selected" window. The display goes to the recipe with no ingredients shown. What did I do wrong?

ANSWER:

When the desired food selection is shown, you must first double-click on it to get the next window asking for quantity. Enter desired quantity and click on "OK" on that window. The selection will then appear in the "Foods Selected" window. When all recipe components have been added, then click on the "OK" in "Foods Selected" to add them to the recipe.

QUESTION:

A problem reported by a Santé user: got error message "TRANSLATE ERROR. VALUE OUT OF BOUNDS" when trying to display History Graph. The user had a computer crash while Santé was running. Santé worked fine before the crash. User reinstalled Santé, but the problem still persists. What do I do now?

ANSWER:

A file(s) may have become corrupted when the computer crashed. Suggestion is to first completely remove Santé, reinstall to get a fresh version, and then recover from most recent backup data from before the crash. It is always a good idea to do frequent backups, especially if you have invested much time and effort into building meals, recipes and the like that you would have a difficult time recreating.

QUESTION:

I am in the process of entering nutrition data from a food package into an Added Food. I am unable to add Vitamin E by %. The area is shaded, which indicates that %’s can be added, but nothing happens when this information is entered. In all other cases where I enter % data, the appropriate mg. quantity is automatically calculated and displayed. What is different about Vitamin E?

ANSWER:

Unfortunately this is a bug in Santé. Vitamin E can still be added by entering the mg. information. For conversion purposes, 1% equals .30 mg. So, for example, if a package label shows the value for Vitamin E to be 5%, you would enter 1.50 mg.

QUESTION:

I own Santé and also NutriStaR CD-ROM and have imported some foods from NutriStaR into Santé’s database. The nutritional values are correct in Santé when doing a single food analysis, but when I add one of these foods to a meal, the values are added incorrectly. No matter which NutriStaR food is used, it adds 789 calories, 94 carbohydrates, 28 fat, and 38 protein. Also, I am unable to "Edit" the serving size information for the NutriStaR imported foods in my Santé meals. A window appears with the message "Recipe missing (deleted?) OK". What is causing this?

ANSWER:

There is a compatibility problem between Santé and NutriStaR foods. The only way to include a food(s) from NutriStaR’s database in a Santé meal is to first manually enter it into Santé as an "Added Food".
