Getting Started

To install Santé, put the CD-ROM into a CD-ROM drive and soon a screen will appear (if Windows autorun has not been disabled).

Click Install and Santé will load onto your computer, asking you a few questions along the way.

If autorun is disabled, go to Start menu, Run and find the setup program on the CD-ROM and click it.

If ever you want to remove Santé, simply go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, find Santé and click Add/Remove.

Note: If you have installed the trial version of Santé, back up your data to floppy, uninstall Santé and then install this version. Then you can restore your data using the new version.

Data from Santé DOS version is not compatible with this one. The USDA has updated their name and numbering schemes which unfortunately prevented compatibility.

How to Lose Weight

It really works. And it's incredibly simple!

If you do the following, you will lose weight.

1) Carefully estimate your activity level under Person/Revise. Answer all the weight questions (present weight, target weight, how much lost or gained last month).

2) Under Reports/Weight Change Recommendations, decide on your desired weight loss per month. Print out the chart. You can always refer to this chart any time you want.

Important: Only 3-4 pounds per month will lose you 36 to 40 pounds per year (imagine yourself 40 pounds lighter).

You don't need to go hungry. Eat as many times a day as you want. Eat what you want. But try to stay within the guidelines and check your RDA graph to be sure you are getting proper nutrition.

3) Carefully measure your food intake every time you eat and enter the foods into your meals for each and every day. A food scale is really helpful.

It becomes easy to estimate how much food you are eating once you spend a week or two measuring everything you eat.

4) Faithfully enter your daily weight in Exercise or in the box provided in meals.

5) View your history graph under Reports/Analyze Range of days every day and try to keep your Calories In below Calories Out.

That's all there is to it. The pounds will slowly but surely melt away.

Entering Personal Data

When Santé first starts, you are taken to the person screen.

Other times you select Person/Revise from the front screen to get there. The person whose name appears on the front screen will be shown on the person screen.

Click inside each box and enter the appropriate data using the keyboard. You can change the data whenever you wish.

For the birthdate, click up and down each arrow, starting with month until you set your birthdate.

Notice the tabs at the top of the person data screen. Here’s what they are for:

Select is to change to another person. To select, click on the person's name.

Activity is where you add your general weekly activity level. Notice that on the left half of the Activity screen, the definition of the various activity levels is automatically displayed when you click inside an hours per week box.

Click on a level's box to enter data directly or click on the triangle to bring up a calculator. The calculator is used to help figure weekly numbers. For example, suppose you sleep 9 hours a night. Press 9 then press the * sign (multiply) then press 7 (for days of the week). Then press the = sign and your hours of sleep per week will show in the box.

The Activity data is used to compute your active calories per day. Your resting calories were computed using your personal data (height, weight, age, gender, pregnancy and lactating status).

Nutrient Display lets you to select the nutrients that will be displayed on the front screen. The checkmark determines if they will be displayed at all. This can also be set under File/Options.

Notes is a place where you can enter anything you want. There is no limit on size except for your computer's disk space.

Entering Meals

From the front screen, click Meals. This brings up the day's meal screen showing 8 meals. The meal name labels can be changed in File/Options.

The printer at the left is to print the day’s menu.

At the top of the 8 meal screen you can select an existing meal date by clicking on the meal calendar or you can change the date using the calendar by clicking on the triangle to the right of the date.

You can enter your weight and you can instantly view any of three reports for the day.

To get to a specific meal you can click within any of the 8 meal blocks. This will bring up the meal input screen.

‘$’ in front of food name means it has cost.

This screen holds the particular meal of the particular date for the particular person.

At the top of the screen, a bar shows all the buttons you can press.

You can by clicking on one of the buttons:

Add a food to the meal.

Add a recipe to the meal

Add a preference to the meal (but first you must save one or more preferences).

Edit the quantity of a food selected in that meal.

Import a whole meal from some other date.

Import food data from the CD-ROM.

Save as a preference the food selected

Delete the food selected.

Print the meal.

Graph a Vitamin Mineral status for the meal, a calorie percentage or a full meal report.

In the upper right of many of Santé's screens is If you click on the question mark and then move your mouse over a button and click, you will get help for that item.

You can change to another meal by clicking on one of the named tabs. The meal names can be changed in File/Options.

Tracking Exercise

This screen calculates the calories expended during the day above and beyond the amount already input in the activity of the person profile weekly activity sheet. If you duplicate calories expended per day by accounting for the calories in two places, you may not lose the weight you think you should.

The additional exercise activity may be selected by clicking on the down arrow key in the exercise field and scrolling to the desired activity. Pressing the letter beginning a word will jump to the first activity with that letter. (e.g. "w" jumps to walking.) The time in hours and minutes should be then entered and the calories expended will be calculated. The total calories expended during the day will then be indicated on the right of the screen.

You can select from hundreds of exercises and enter the time spent on each. Your extra calorie expenditure for the day will be automatically computed and recorded.

For each day you can enter notes of any length. They will be saved with the exercises for that day.

Record your weight for the day here. If you had entered your weight for this day under meals, it will show up here. The weight is used to generate reports and to recommend weight control programs.

The calories expended doing these activities are not included in Report/Weight Recommendation but are included in the Report/Analyze Range graphs.

Adding Recipes

The last recipe you accessed will display when you first see this screen.

You can create a new recipe, or open a recipe that you have worked on before.

Important: be sure to verify the servings in the upper right.

Cost is computed lower right. A "?" mark after the cost means not all ingredients have costs. ‘$’ in front of food name means it has cost.

Recipe Scaling enlarges or reduces the size of the recipe but leaves the portion size of each serving the same.

To delete an ingredient from the recipe, click on the ingredient and then press the Delete Item button. To change the name of the recipe, click on its name. To change the quantity of an ingredient, click on the ingredient then press

Tip: You can add recipes to a recipe. So when you have something you use all the time in recipes (a particular sauce, etc.) putting that in a stand-alone recipe will save a lot of time.

To start a new recipe, click

Import or Delete Foods in the Database

This screen (Utilities/Import Food Data) allows you to delete or add foods from/to the Santé database using data on the CD-ROM. Double click on the food you want to delete (top table) or double click on the food you want to add (bottom table).

The Santé working database resides on the hard drive and is shown in the upper grid.

Santé will try to open the 7,000 food database on the CD-ROM, so be sure it is in a CD drive. It is shown in the lower grid.

Find: this brings up a box into which you place some words which will select the food(s) for which you are looking. Reset: Show all the foods in the respective database.

Copy Up: copy the food from the lower database into the Santé database.

You can delete a food in the upper grid by clicking on the food, then right-click to bring up Delete Item menu selection. Caution: Santé does not check to see if the food exists in a recipe or meal. You can always recover the food from the CD-ROM.

Costs

Using this screen (Utilities/Food Cost) you can enter costs for any food in the Santé database. You find the food, select the price unit (lower left) and enter the price. The cost is then saved per gram if the food has a gram weight (all foods have gram weights except those which you enter without weight).

Once the cost is in the food, any time it is used in a recipe or a meal, Santé will calculate the cost of the recipe or meal or day. The total costs appear on the meal, day, recipe and report screens. Costs showing a ‘?’ mark are incomplete. That is, some component of the meal or recipe has not yet been costed.

Foods that have costs will show up thereafter with ‘$’ in front of the food name. Further, when adding foods to meals or recipes, the costed foods will show at the top of the "adding" food list.

Adding a Labeled Food

Under Utilities/Added Foods, you can add a food from anywhere as long as you know something about its nutrition value. Generally, data from labels on foods work fine. Also, many fast food restaurants can provide data on nutrition values of their offerings.

You can choose any name and serving size you like for foods you add to Santé.

Tip: when setting serving size try not to enter quantities. For example, if you are adding a "can" of something, it is best to enter "can" instead of "1 can". The reason is this: when you select "can" as a serving, you then select a serving size of "1". If you had entered "1 can" as a serving, then your meal or recipe would show "1 1 can" instead of "1 can".

Click the Quantity button to enter quantity. Since Santé stores everything it can by weight (grams) the quantity screen will compute different weights for you. If you enter a fluid measure, select Water or Oil based. If the fluid is mixed oil and water, choose the predominate base.

You can use the Prior and Next buttons to visit other added foods.

The added foods reside right along with all the other foods in the same database (surv2s.db). Once added, they may then be included in your meals and recipes.

Directly Accessing Santé Data

You can directly access the Santé database from Utilities/Edit Food Data. Before you get into this screen, a help file will come up with cautions about this screen. Use Ctrl-Delete to delete a selected food. A food is selected when a triangle appears at the left side of the food. Caution: deleting a food or changing a value does not recompute any meal or recipe data. Nor are meals or recipes checked to see if they incorporate a food you are deleting.

Backup

File/Backup/Restore gets you to this screen. Backup is done to the floppy drive in a:. You will need to have a formatted floppy diskette available. In the event your data files get pretty large, you may need additional floppy diskettes. The Backup routine will let you know if it needs more.

Restore takes the data from the floppy diskette in a: and places it back in the same location it was before. That is, if backed up data was taken from c:\sante directory then it will be sent back to the same directory. In the event you have a backup floppy made from, say, someone else’s e:\sante directory then Restore will place the data on e:\sante if it can.

Restore overwrites all Santé data files, so use this feature with caution.

You can back up at any time and we recommend you do so frequently because hard drive crashes or data corruption are still distinct possibilities.

The data on the floppy diskette is encrypted, compressed and unreadable except by the restore routine in Santé.

On-line Help

On-line Help contains detailed explanations of all the Santé features, including how to enter personal data, meals, recipes, added foods, costs, etc., as well as importing foods, backing up your data and directly accessing the Santé food database. There are also topics of general use, like cooking terms and ingredients, exercise fundamentals, nutrition guidelines, food storage tips, etc.

If you click on the question mark (upper right of many screens) then click on a button, you will see help for that item.
