The debate regarding the safety of mercury in vaccines stuns me.
Everyone agrees that mercury is toxic. Yet doctors, health departments, and researchers claim that there is no scientific evidence that vaccines containing mercury cause or contribute to autism or other disorders. There is truth in this, but it is not the whole truth. Those involved with modern American medicine like to describe and defend its practices based on scientific studies. These have brought many good things to healthcare, but it is my opinion that their results have been applied too broadly.

Scientific studies represent a population or a community of people. They do NOT represent the individual. By their very design, studies expect a small number of people's responses or results to be outside the usual result range (in statistics, these are the people whose results are above and below two standard deviations from the mean). Therefore authors of studies on mercury containing vaccines cannot honestly state that these vaccines do not cause or contribute to autism or any other disorder. All they can say is that most recipients of mercury containing vaccines seem to tolerate them very well and our society subsequently benefits from the drop in potentially deadly diseases. From the government's or health insurance company's perspective, this improvement in societal health is what matters most. From the doctor's point of view however, it is their individual patient's health that is their primary responsibility and it should be recognized that unusual responses to any treatment may be important and valid.
Anecdotal reports of autism-spectrum disorders following mercury containing vaccinations have increased over the past twenty years. The rates of these devastating disabilities and their costs to our society (let alone to the parents of affected children) rose in parallel with the numbers of mercury containing vaccines being administered. Fortunately, mercury-free vaccines are becoming easier to get and it is hoped that the "autism epidemic" will stop.

Everyone agrees that mercury is toxic. The organs that are most critically affected are the brain and central nervous system. Because of these facts and the inherent limitations of research studies, we should not wait for scientific evidence to prove something that common sense argues is happening now. Mercury must be removed from all vaccines! Our population and especially our children must be protected.
